The Employees’ State Insurance Act, 1948 marked a significant step towards workers’ social security in India. The scheme, inaugurated in Kanpur on February 24, 1952, marked a significant milestone. The first coverage involved 120,000 employees in both Kanpur and Delhi. Nehru, the first honorary insured person, signed a declaration that became a treasured document. The scheme traces its roots to 1944 when it first emerged as a social security initiative.
