What This Tool Does

This speed calculator finds any one of speed, distance, or time when the other two values are known, using the fundamental relationship between them, and converts between common speed units.

You can also use this ROI Calculator.

How It's Calculated

Speed = Distance ÷ Time Distance = Speed × Time Time = Distance ÷ Speed

Worked example: A runner covers 400 meters in 50 seconds.

  • Speed: 400 ÷ 50 = 8 m/s
  • Converted to km/h: 8 × 3.6 = 28.8 km/h

Edge Cases and Special Rules

  • Units must be consistent before calculating: If time is given in minutes but you want speed in meters per second, convert time to seconds first — mixing units without converting gives an incorrect result.
  • This formula gives average speed, not a moment-by-moment reading: Real travel rarely happens at a perfectly constant speed — a car trip includes stops and speed changes, a race has pace variation. This calculation gives the average over the whole distance and time, not what's happening at any single instant.
  • Unit choice depends on context: Meters per second suits physics problems; km/h or mph suits everyday travel; knots suit marine and aviation contexts — the right unit depends on what's being measured and where.

Average Speed vs. Instantaneous Speed

These are genuinely different concepts, even though they're both called "speed." This calculator finds average speed — total distance divided by total time, smoothing out any variation along the way. Instantaneous speed — what a car's speedometer or a live GPS tracker shows — measures the rate of change at one specific moment, which requires continuous real-time measurement rather than a simple before-and-after calculation. That's why this tool, and others like it, can't replicate what a live speedometer or GPS app shows in real time.

Who Uses This

  • Students learning and applying the speed-distance-time formula
  • Runners and cyclists calculating their pace
  • Drivers estimating trip duration from distance and expected speed
  • Anyone converting between speed units (mph to km/h, for example) for travel or international contexts

This Calculator vs. Live Speed Tracking

These serve different purposes. This calculator computes average speed from distance and time values you provide yourself, after the fact or for planning purposes. Live speed tracking — a car's speedometer, a GPS running app, or an internet speed test — measures speed or data transfer rate continuously in real time, using sensors or active network testing. If you need your current real-time speed, you'll need a live-tracking tool rather than this kind of formula-based calculator.

FAQ

What is the formula for speed?

Speed equals distance divided by time; rearranged, distance equals speed times time, and time equals distance divided by speed.

How do I convert between speed units?

Use standard conversion factors, for example, 1 m/s equals 3.6 km/h, and 1 mph equals about 1.609 km/h.

Does this show my real-time speed?

No, it calculates average speed from distance and time values you enter, not a live, continuously updating reading.

Why does my result differ from my car's speedometer?

This calculator gives average speed over an entire trip, while a speedometer shows instantaneous speed at that specific moment, the two measure different things.

What's a typical walking or running speed?

Average walking speed is roughly 5 km/h, while running speeds vary widely depending on pace and fitness level.
