Gold Calculator
What This Tool Does
This calculator estimates the total price of gold based on weight, purity, making charges, and GST โ using the current market rate. It also works in reverse, showing how much gold a given budget can buy.
You can also use this IDV Calculator.
How It’s Calculated
Base Value = Weight ร Rate for Selected Purity Making Charges = Base Value ร Making Charge % Subtotal = Base Value + Making Charges GST = Subtotal ร 3% Total Price = Subtotal + GST
Worked example (using an illustrative rate, not a live quote): 15 grams of 22K gold at a hypothetical rate of โน13,000/gram, with 8% making charges.
- Base value: 15 ร 13,000 = โน1,95,000
- Making charges: 1,95,000 ร 8% = โน15,600
- Subtotal: 1,95,000 + 15,600 = โน2,10,600
- GST (3%): 2,10,600 ร 3% = โน6,318
- Total: โน2,16,918
Gold rates change daily โ sometimes multiple times a day โ so always use the calculator above for today’s actual rate rather than a fixed reference figure.
Edge Cases and Special Rules
- Purity affects the rate, not just the weight: 24K, 22K, and 18K gold are quoted at different per-gram rates, reflecting both purity and, for lower karats, the added alloy content โ rates aren’t simply the 24K rate scaled down proportionally in every market.
- GST applies to the combined subtotal: The 3% GST is calculated on gold value plus making charges together, not on the gold value alone.
- Making charges aren’t recoverable at resale: When you sell gold jewelry back, buyers typically pay based on the gold’s weight and purity โ the making charges you originally paid aren’t reflected in the resale price.
- Unit conversions matter: 1 tola = 11.664 grams, and 1 pavan (or sovereign) = 8 grams โ mixing up units before entering weight can significantly skew the result.
Regional Differences in Gold Pricing and Units
Gold rates can vary slightly city to city, driven by local demand, transport costs, and regional jeweler association pricing conventions. Measurement conventions also differ by region within India โ grams are standard nationally, but tola is commonly used in parts of North India, while pavan (sovereign) is the more familiar unit in South India. Entering the wrong unit for your region is a common source of calculation confusion.
Who Uses This
- Buyers wanting to estimate a jewelry purchase price before visiting a store
- Investors comparing the cost of physical gold against gold ETFs or Sovereign Gold Bonds
- Families budgeting for weddings or festival purchases
- Anyone checking whether a jeweler’s quoted making charge falls within a typical range
Gold Value vs. Total Purchase Price
These aren’t the same number, and the difference matters most at resale time. “Gold value” is simply weight multiplied by the purity-specific rate โ the intrinsic worth of the metal itself. “Total purchase price” adds making charges and GST on top, which cover labor and tax but don’t represent metal value. Since making charges typically aren’t recovered on resale, the total price you pay is usually higher than what you’d receive back later for the same piece.
FAQ
What factors determine the final gold purchase price?
Weight, purity (karat), the current market rate, making charges, and GST.
Are making charges refundable if I resell my gold jewelry?
No โ resale value is typically based on gold weight and purity, not the original making charges paid.
How is GST applied to gold purchases?
A 3% GST is calculated on the combined value of the gold and the making charges.
What is a tola or a pavan?
Traditional gold weight units โ 1 tola equals 11.664 grams, and 1 pavan (or sovereign) equals 8 grams.
Why do gold rates differ by city?
Local demand, transport costs, and regional jeweler association conventions can all cause small city-to-city rate differences.
