Adding or subtracting days from a date:

Edge Cases and Special Rules

Leap years: February has 28 days in standard years and 29 in leap years. A leap year occurs every 4 years, except century years not divisible by 400. So 2000 was a leap year, but 1900 was not. The calculator handles this automatically.

Month-end dates: Adding one month to January 31 is ambiguous — February has no 31st. Most systems land on the last day of the target month (February 28 or 29) in this case.

Business days vs. calendar days: If you need to exclude weekends or public holidays from your count, use the business days option where available. A 30-calendar-day period may contain only 20–22 working days depending on weekends and holidays in your region.

Time zones: Date calculators work with calendar dates only, not time zones. If a deadline crosses midnight in a different time zone, the exact cutoff depends on the applicable region’s local time.

How the Gregorian Calendar Works

The Gregorian calendar — used almost universally today — has 365 days in a standard year and 366 in a leap year. Months have either 30 or 31 days, except February. It replaced the Julian calendar in 1582 when Pope Gregory XIII corrected a drift of roughly 11 minutes per year that had accumulated over centuries, eventually causing a 10-day discrepancy. The fix involved skipping those 10 days and adjusting which century years qualify as leap years — only those divisible by 400.
