The company operates India’s first public-private partnership in the port sector, revolutionizing maritime logistics in the region. Its collaboration with Indian Railways through a joint venture established a seamless rail connection. This allowed the port to lead the way in pioneering double-stack container train services. These trains carry 180 TEUs, doubling the efficiency of traditional single-stack trains. The port also became the first to receive a coastal RoRo vessel, enhancing operational versatility.
In 2005, strategic investments helped the port strengthen its position, and by 2009, its container terminal became fully operational. Continuous innovation and investment expanded container capacity, which reached 1.35 million TEUs by 2016. In 2015, the port launched RoRo operations, handling significant volumes in a short time. Milestones like the handling of the 100,000th auto unit within 20 months of operations reflect consistent growth.
The port’s commitment to sustainability led to the development of an environmentally friendly coal yard and a significant solar power initiative in 2022. This installation offsets about 10% of the port’s energy consumption, reducing its environmental footprint. The facility also supports bulk agri-commodity handling, resuming such operations through new warehousing and training investments.
By 2020, the board approved a major expansion project, increasing container capacity to 1.6 million TEUs to accommodate larger vessels. This project aimed to meet the growing demands of global trade. Recognition of the port’s efficiency came in 2022 when it was ranked as India’s most efficient port in the Global Container Port Performance Index. The company continues to push the boundaries of innovation, operational efficiency, and sustainability to enhance its competitive edge.
