SGB returns are estimates based on entered gold price assumptions. Actual redemption price is set by RBI based on average IBJA gold price in the week prior to maturity. Interest of 2.5% p.a. is fixed. Capital gains at 8-year maturity are tax-exempt under Section 47. Not financial advice.

What This Tool Does

This calculator estimates the total returns on a Sovereign Gold Bond investment across its 8-year tenure. Enter your investment amount, issue price per gram, and an assumed gold price at maturity, and it returns your semi-annual interest payout schedule, total interest earned over the full period, estimated redemption value, and combined maturity corpus. It works for both primary market purchases (directly through RBI, banks, or post offices) and secondary market purchases (through Zerodha, Groww, Angel One, or other trading platforms).

You can also use this Zakat Calculator.

How It’s Calculated

SGB returns come from two separate streams — fixed interest and gold price appreciation — which are calculated differently and taxed differently.

Stream 1 — Fixed Semi-Annual Interest

The Government of India pays simple interest at 2.50% per annum on the original nominal issue price of the bond. This is not compound interest — it is calculated on the face value every period, regardless of what gold prices do.

Formula:

Semi-Annual Interest = Nominal Investment × 2.50% ÷ 2

Annual Interest = Nominal Investment × 2.50%

Total 8-Year Interest = Annual Interest × 8

Worked Example:

  • Investment: ₹1,00,000 (20 grams at ₹5,000 per gram)
  • Semi-annual payout: ₹1,00,000 × 1.25% = ₹1,250 every 6 months
  • Annual payout: ₹2,500
  • Total interest over 8 years: ₹20,000

This interest is credited directly to your bank account every six months on fixed calendar dates tied to the issue date of your specific tranche.

Stream 2 — Capital Appreciation at Maturity

At maturity, bonds are redeemed at the prevailing market price of 999 purity gold, calculated as the simple average of the IBJA (India Bullion and Jewellers Association) closing price for the 3 working days preceding maturity.

Formula:

Redemption Value = Number of Grams × Gold Price at Maturity

Capital Gain = Redemption Value − Original Issue Value

Worked Example (assuming gold at ₹7,500/gram at maturity):

  • Grams held: 20
  • Redemption Value: 20 × ₹7,500 = ₹1,50,000
  • Capital Gain: ₹1,50,000 − ₹1,00,000 = ₹50,000 (tax-free for individuals)

Total Maturity Corpus

Total Return = Cumulative Interest + Redemption Value

= ₹20,000 + ₹1,50,000 = ₹1,70,000

That represents a 70% total return on ₹1,00,000 invested over 8 years — with the capital gains portion entirely tax-free for individual investors.

Primary Market vs. Secondary Market — Key Difference

Primary Market (RBI Subscription)

When you buy SGBs directly through RBI during a subscription window — via SBI, HDFC, ICICI, Post Office, or SHCIL — you pay the official issue price set by RBI for that tranche. An online discount of ₹50 per gram applies if you subscribe digitally. Interest is calculated on this official issue price and the payout calendar dates are tied to the issue date.

Secondary Market (Stock Exchange)

If you buy SGBs listed on NSE or BSE through platforms like Zerodha, Groww, or Angel One, you pay the current market trading price — which may be above or below the original issue price depending on gold prices and market demand.

Critical rule: Interest is always calculated on the original nominal issue price of the tranche — not on what you paid in the secondary market. If you bought at a premium, your effective yield on interest is lower than 2.50%. If you bought at a discount, your effective yield is higher.

Example:

  • Original issue price: ₹5,000/gram
  • Your secondary market purchase price: ₹4,800/gram (discount of ₹200/gram)
  • Interest calculated on: ₹5,000/gram (not ₹4,800)
  • Your additional return: the ₹200/gram discount becomes extra capital gain at maturity

Tax Treatment of SGB Returns

Capital gains at maturity (8 years) or RBI premature redemption (after 5 years):
Completely exempt from capital gains tax for individual investors under Section 47(viic) of the Income Tax Act. This is one of the most significant tax advantages of SGBs compared to physical gold or gold ETFs.

Semi-annual interest income:
Taxable as income from other sources at your applicable income tax slab rate. No TDS is deducted on interest payouts — you must declare and pay tax on this yourself during ITR filing.

Secondary market sale before maturity:
If you sell SGBs on the stock exchange before maturity, long-term capital gains tax applies if held for more than 12 months (taxed at 12.5% without indexation as per current rules). Short-term gains (held under 12 months) are taxed at your slab rate.

Edge Cases and Special Rules

Online discount: The ₹50/gram discount for digital subscription applies only to primary market purchases made through online channels. It does not apply to secondary market purchases.

Premature redemption: RBI allows premature redemption starting from the 5th year, on the interest payment dates of that tranche. Capital gains on RBI-route premature redemption remain tax-free. You cannot trigger premature redemption at will — it must align with scheduled coupon dates.

Minimum and maximum investment: The minimum purchase is 1 gram. The maximum per financial year is 4 kg for individuals and HUFs, and 20 kg for trusts and similar entities. Joint holdings are counted under the first applicant’s limit.

Gold purity at redemption: Redemption is always based on 999 purity gold prices published by IBJA — the same standard regardless of when or how you purchased the bond.

SGB series identification: Each RBI tranche has a specific series name (e.g., 2023-24 Series IV). The issue date and coupon schedule are tied to the series. For primary market purchases, identifying your series tells you exactly when interest credits occur.

SGBs are uniquely advantaged for long-term gold exposure because they combine gold price upside with a fixed income stream and complete tax exemption on capital gains — three features no other gold investment product offers simultaneously.

Who Uses This

  • Long-term investors comparing SGB returns against FD, PPF, or gold ETF alternatives before committing capital
  • Secondary market buyers on Zerodha, Groww, or Angel One who want to verify their effective yield based on the price they actually paid
  • Retirees and conservative investors who want gold exposure with a guaranteed semi-annual income stream
  • Tax planners calculating post-tax returns on SGB interest relative to their income slab
  • First-time gold investors deciding between physical gold, ETFs, and SGBs

FAQ

How is SGB interest calculated?

Interest is 2.50% per annum calculated on the original nominal issue price — not the market price you paid. It uses simple interest, paid in two equal installments of 1.25% every 6 months directly to your bank account.

Is SGB interest compounded?

No. SGB interest is simple interest, calculated on the face value at issuance throughout the 8-year tenure. The interest does not compound — it is paid out every 6 months.

What happens if gold prices fall at maturity?

Your redemption value will be lower than your original investment if gold prices decline. The 2.50% annual interest partially offsets this, but SGBs do carry gold price risk. There is no capital protection guarantee.

Can I sell SGBs before 8 years?

Yes, in two ways. After 5 years, you can redeem through the RBI premature exit window on coupon dates — capital gains remain tax-free. Alternatively, if your SGBs are in demat form, you can sell on NSE or BSE at the prevailing market price at any time — but secondary market sales before maturity attract capital gains tax.

If I buy SGBs from the secondary market, is interest still 2.50%?

Yes, but it is calculated on the original RBI issue price for that tranche — not your purchase price. If you bought at a discount, your effective interest yield is higher than 2.50%. If you bought at a premium, your effective yield is lower.

A Note on Results

All maturity value projections depend on the assumed gold price you enter — actual gold prices at maturity will differ. Interest calculations are based on the fixed 2.50% rate and are accurate for planning purposes. Tax liability on interest depends on your individual income tax slab and should be confirmed with a chartered accountant. For official SGB series data, issue prices, and coupon schedules, refer to the RBI website or your bank’s SGB subscription portal.
