How It’s Calculated
If efficiency is in km/l: Fuel Needed (litres) = Distance (km) ÷ Efficiency (km/l)
If efficiency is in L/100km: Fuel Needed (litres) = Distance (km) × (Efficiency ÷ 100)
Total Fuel Cost = Fuel Needed × Price per Litre
Worked example (using an illustrative fuel price, not a live quote): A 350 km trip, vehicle efficiency of 15 km/l, at a hypothetical price of ₹100/litre.
- Fuel needed: 350 ÷ 15 ≈ 23.33 litres
- Total cost: 23.33 × 100 = ₹2,333
For a round trip, double the one-way distance before calculating.
Edge Cases and Special Rules
- Two different efficiency formats need different formulas: km/l and L/100km measure the same thing in opposite directions — using the wrong formula for the format entered will give a badly wrong result.
- Rated efficiency isn’t guaranteed on the actual trip: A vehicle’s manufacturer or previously measured efficiency is just a starting estimate — actual consumption depends on driving conditions during that specific trip.
- Fuel price varies by state in India: Different state taxes on fuel mean the price per litre can differ noticeably between states, so use the correct local price for an accurate estimate.
- This doesn’t include tolls or other trip costs: Fuel cost is only one part of total trip expense — highway tolls, parking, and other charges need to be added separately.
Highway vs. City Driving Efficiency
The same vehicle often gets meaningfully different mileage depending on the type of driving. Highway driving at a steady speed generally achieves better fuel efficiency than city driving, which involves frequent stopping, idling, and acceleration. If your trip is mostly highway, actual fuel cost may come in lower than a combined or city-rated efficiency figure would suggest — and the reverse is true for a trip through heavy city traffic.
