How It’s Calculated
Mileage (km/l) = Distance Travelled ÷ Fuel Consumed Total Fuel Cost = Fuel Consumed × Fuel Price Fuel Cost per km = Total Fuel Cost ÷ Distance Travelled
Worked example (using an illustrative fuel price, not a live quote): 250 km travelled on 18 litres of petrol, at a hypothetical rate of ₹95/litre.
- Mileage: 250 ÷ 18 ≈ 13.89 km/l
- Total fuel cost: 18 × 95 = ₹1,710
- Fuel cost per km: 1,710 ÷ 250 = ₹6.84/km
- Fuel cost per 100 km: ₹684

Edge Cases and Special Rules
- Full-tank-to-full-tank is the most reliable method: Filling up completely, resetting the trip meter, driving until the tank is empty (or near it), then refilling to full again gives a far more accurate reading than a partial top-up.
- CNG uses different units: Since CNG is measured by weight rather than volume, mileage is expressed in km/kg instead of km/l — don’t mix the two when comparing vehicles.
- EVs use an entirely different formula: Electric vehicle “mileage” isn’t distance-per-volume at all — it’s based on energy consumption (kWh) and your electricity tariff, calculated as Energy Used = Distance × Efficiency, then Cost = Energy Used × Tariff.
- Multiple readings give a more reliable average: A single trip’s mileage can be skewed by traffic, AC use, or terrain — averaging 2–3 separate readings gives a more representative figure.
Fuel Efficiency Units by Region and Fuel Type
Mileage isn’t expressed the same way everywhere. India and most of the world use km/l (or l/100km) for petrol and diesel vehicles, while the US and UK commonly use miles per gallon (mpg). CNG vehicles are measured in km/kg due to their fuel being weighed rather than measured by volume. Electric vehicles are typically measured in kWh/km or simply cost-per-km, since there’s no fuel volume involved at all.
