How It's Calculated

US Navy Method

Developed by Hodgdon and Beckett at the Naval Health Research Center in 1984, this method uses body circumference measurements as a proxy for body fat. It is one of the most practical field methods available because it requires only a tape measure.

Measurements needed:

  • Waist: Measured at the navel level for men; at the narrowest point for women. Do not suck in — the measurement must reflect your natural waist.
  • Neck: Measured just below the larynx, tape angled slightly downward toward the front.
  • Hips (women only): Measured at the widest horizontal point.

Formulas (metric):

For men:
BFP = 495 ÷ (1.0324 − 0.19077 × log₁₀(waist − neck) + 0.15456 × log₁₀(height)) − 450

For women:
BFP = 495 ÷ (1.29579 − 0.35004 × log₁₀(waist + hip − neck) + 0.22100 × log₁₀(height)) − 450

Worked Example — Male:

  • Height: 178 cm
  • Waist: 85 cm
  • Neck: 38 cm

BFP = 495 ÷ (1.0324 − 0.19077 × log₁₀(85 − 38) + 0.15456 × log₁₀(178)) − 450

= 495 ÷ (1.0324 − 0.19077 × 1.672 + 0.15456 × 2.250) − 450

= 495 ÷ (1.0324 − 0.319 + 0.348) − 450

= 495 ÷ 1.062 − 450 = ~16.1%

Fat Mass and Lean Mass:

Once BFP is known:

  • Fat Mass = BFP × Body Weight
  • Lean Body Mass = Body Weight − Fat Mass

For a 75 kg person at 16.1%: Fat Mass = 12.1 kg, Lean Body Mass = 62.9 kg

BMI Method

This method estimates body fat from BMI, age, and gender. It is less accurate than the Navy method because it cannot distinguish between fat and muscle, but it requires no circumference measurements.

Formulas:

  • Adult males: BFP = 1.20 × BMI + 0.23 × Age − 16.2
  • Adult females: BFP = 1.20 × BMI + 0.23 × Age − 5.4

Worked Example — Female, age 30, BMI 23:
BFP = 1.20 × 23 + 0.23 × 30 − 5.4 = 27.6 + 6.9 − 5.4 = 29.1%

Essential fat is the minimum required for basic physiological function and reproductive health. Falling at or below essential fat levels is a medical concern and should be discussed with a healthcare professional.

Edge Cases and Special Rules

Measurement accuracy matters: The Navy method is only as good as the measurements entered. Measure to the nearest 0.5 cm, take measurements on bare skin rather than over clothing, and measure at the same time of day — ideally in the morning before eating — for consistency.

The method underestimates fat in very sedentary individuals and overestimates in highly muscular people: Like all circumference-based methods, the Navy formula assumes average body proportions. Athletes with large neck circumferences or very lean individuals with compact midsections may see less accurate estimates.

Very high or very low body fat: At extremes — very lean athletes below 6% for men or 13% for women, or obese individuals above 40% — circumference-based formulas lose accuracy. Hydrostatic weighing, DEXA scanning, or bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) provide more reliable measurements in these ranges.

Men vs. women fat distribution: Men tend to accumulate fat around the abdomen (visceral fat), while women tend to accumulate it around the hips, thighs, and buttocks. This distribution shifts with age and hormonal changes — particularly after 40 for men and at menopause for women.

Visceral vs. subcutaneous fat: The calculator estimates total body fat percentage. It cannot distinguish between subcutaneous fat (under the skin) and visceral fat (around internal organs). Visceral fat carries greater health risk and is associated with elevated LDL cholesterol, insulin resistance, and cardiovascular disease — but requires imaging or advanced body composition testing to measure directly.

Body Fat Calculator vs. BMI Calculator

BMI measures weight relative to height — it cannot distinguish between fat and muscle. A bodybuilder and an obese sedentary person can have the same BMI. Body fat percentage directly estimates how much of your body weight is fat tissue, making it a more precise indicator of body composition and metabolic health.

That said, body fat calculators based on circumference measurements are still estimates — they are more informative than BMI but less accurate than clinical methods such as DEXA scanning or hydrostatic weighing.

FAQ

What is a healthy body fat percentage?

For men, 8–19% is generally considered healthy. For women, 21–33%. Athletes often fall below these ranges. Body fat above 25% for men and 32% for women is classified as obese by the American Council on Exercise.

How do I measure waist correctly for this calculator?

For men, measure around the abdomen at navel height. For women, measure at the narrowest point of the torso. Stand relaxed — do not draw in your stomach — and keep the tape horizontal all the way around.

Is the US Navy method accurate?

It is reasonably accurate for most adults within the average body composition range — typically within 3–4 percentage points of more precise methods. It becomes less reliable at extremes of body composition. For clinical purposes, DEXA or hydrostatic weighing is more accurate.

Can I calculate body fat without measuring hips or neck?

The BMI method requires only height, weight, and age — no circumference measurements. However, it is less accurate than the Navy method, particularly for people with higher or lower than average muscle mass.

How is body fat different from BMI?

BMI is a ratio of weight to height squared and does not directly measure fat. Body fat percentage is a direct estimate of how much of your total body weight is adipose (fat) tissue. Two people with the same BMI can have very different body fat percentages depending on their muscle mass.
