What This Tool Does

Air Quality Index numbers can be hard to feel in real terms. This calculator translates an AQI reading into an estimate of how many cigarettes’ worth of health impact that air represents over a day — a way to make an abstract score more intuitive.

You can also use this Stock Average Calculator.

How It’s Calculated

The conversion happens in two steps.

Step 1 — AQI to PM2.5. AQI is a category score, not a raw pollution measurement. It first has to be converted back into a PM2.5 concentration (micrograms of fine particulate matter per cubic metre), using the official breakpoint tables that regulators use to build the index in the first place.

Step 2 — PM2.5 to cigarette-equivalent. Public health research has estimated that sustained exposure to roughly 22 micrograms per cubic metre of PM2.5 over 24 hours carries a health impact comparable to smoking about one cigarette. Dividing the PM2.5 figure from Step 1 by that benchmark, and scaling for the number of hours exposed, gives the cigarette-equivalent number.

Worked example: Say a reading converts to a PM2.5 concentration of 88 μg/m³, and you’re estimating exposure over a full 24-hour day.

  • 88 ÷ 22 = 4

That works out to roughly 4 cigarettes’ worth of estimated health impact for that day. Change the AQI or the exposure time and the estimate scales accordingly — that’s exactly what the calculator above does automatically.

Edge Cases and Special Rules

  • It’s an estimate, not a diagnosis. Converting AQI to PM2.5 and then to a cigarette-equivalent involves two layers of approximation, so results are rounded to the nearest whole number rather than shown with false precision.
  • Not all pollution is equal. The cigarette comparison is based on PM2.5 specifically. Other pollutants (ozone, NO₂, wildfire smoke composition) can carry different health effects that this shortcut doesn’t fully capture.
  • Exposure time matters. A high AQI for one hour outdoors is not the same as 24 hours of continuous exposure — the calculator lets you adjust for actual time spent in that air.
  • Breakpoint tables change. Regulators periodically revise the concentration bands used to calculate AQI, which can shift results even for the same PM2.5 level over time.

AQI Scales Differ by Country

Not every country calculates AQI the same way. The US EPA’s index and India’s National Air Quality Index (published by the CPCB) use different breakpoint tables and, in some categories, different pollutants entirely. An AQI of, say, 150 doesn’t necessarily correspond to the same PM2.5 concentration on both scales. Cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Pune report AQI under the Indian standard, so a calculator built for accuracy needs to know which scale a given reading comes from before converting it.

Who Uses This

  • Residents checking how a smoggy day compares to a familiar reference point
  • Parents deciding whether outdoor activity is worth limiting on a high-AQI day
  • People sharing air quality context on social media in a way that’s easier to grasp than a raw index number
  • Anyone curious how their city’s AQI today stacks up in relatable terms

AQI vs. PM2.5 — Not the Same Thing

AQI is a standardized score built from PM2.5 (and sometimes other pollutants) using breakpoint tables and rounding rules. PM2.5 is the actual raw measurement in micrograms per cubic metre. Two cities can report the same AQI while having slightly different PM2.5 levels, depending on which pollutant is driving the index that day.

FAQ

What is an AQI to cigarette calculator?

A tool that estimates the cigarette-equivalent health impact of a given AQI reading, based on published PM2.5 research.

Is the cigarette number exact?

No — it’s a rounded estimate built on two layers of approximation, meant for comparison, not precise health guidance.

Does a higher AQI always mean more cigarettes?

Generally yes, since higher AQI reflects higher PM2.5, but the relationship isn’t perfectly linear across all AQI categories.

Can I use this for Indian AQI readings?

Yes, as long as the calculator is set to the correct scale, since India’s National AQI and the US AQI use different breakpoints.

Does this account for wildfire smoke or dust storms?

Not specifically — the estimate is based on general PM2.5 exposure and doesn’t distinguish pollution sources.
