How It's Calculated
Time arithmetic follows a base-60 system (sexagesimal) rather than the base-10 decimal system used for regular numbers. This means:
- 60 seconds = 1 minute
- 60 minutes = 1 hour
- 24 hours = 1 day
When adding or subtracting time, each unit must be converted and carried over at its respective threshold.
Worked Example — Adding Time:
Add 3 hours 45 minutes 50 seconds to 2 hours 30 minutes 25 seconds:
- Seconds: 50 + 25 = 75 → 1 minute carried, 15 seconds remain
- Minutes: 45 + 30 + 1 = 76 → 1 hour carried, 16 minutes remain
- Hours: 3 + 2 + 1 = 6
Result: 6 hours 16 minutes 15 seconds

Subtract 1 hour 50 minutes from 3 hours 20 minutes:

Edge Cases and Special Rules
Crossing midnight: When adding time that pushes past 24:00, the calculator rolls over to the next day automatically. A shift starting at 10:00 PM for 9 hours ends at 7:00 AM the following day — not at 31:00.
Leap years: When calculating time across date boundaries, leap years add an extra 86,400 seconds (one full day) to February. The calculator accounts for this automatically.
Negative results: Subtracting a larger time value from a smaller one produces a negative result. Depending on the context — a countdown, a time zone offset, or a deadline check — this may indicate the time has already passed.
Daylight Saving Time (DST): When calculating elapsed time across a DST boundary, clocks shift by one hour forward or back. Pure time arithmetic does not account for this — if your calculation crosses a DST changeover, the actual elapsed real-world time may differ by one hour from the calculator's output.
Milliseconds and beyond: For scientific or technical purposes, time is measured well beyond seconds — milliseconds (10⁻³), microseconds (10⁻⁶), nanoseconds (10⁻⁹), and picoseconds (10⁻¹²). Standard time calculators work at the seconds level; sub-second precision requires specialised tools.
How Time Measurement Developed
The base-60 system used for measuring time traces back to ancient Sumer around 3000 BC and was later adopted by the Babylonians. The number 60 was chosen partly because it divides evenly by 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 10, 12, 15, 20, and 30 — making fractions far simpler to work with than a base-10 system would allow.
The 24-hour day is attributed to ancient Egyptian astronomers who divided daylight and nighttime each into 12 segments. Fixed equal-length hours only became standard in the 14th century with the arrival of mechanical clocks. The familiar division of degrees and hours into 60 minutes, and minutes into 60 seconds, was formalised by the Greek astronomer Hipparchus around 150 BC.
Today, the most precise timekeeping uses atomic clocks — specifically cesium atomic clocks — which track time based on the resonance frequency of cesium atoms. The SI unit of one second is officially defined in terms of this atomic measurement.
