What Is Attendance Percentage and Why Does It Matter?

Attendance percentage is the ratio of classes you have attended to the total number of classes held, expressed as a percentage. Most colleges and universities in India require students to maintain a minimum of 75% attendance to be eligible for semester exams.

Falling below the required attendance threshold can result in detention, exam bar, or de-registration — so keeping track is essential.

📌 Standard Requirement: Most Indian universities including Anna University, VTU, SRM, VIT, KTU, LPU, Amity, JNTU, and CBSE institutions require a minimum of 75% attendance. Some require 85%. Always confirm with your institution.

Attendance Percentage Calculator – Formula & How It Works

The attendance percentage formula is simple:

Attendance % = (Classes Attended ÷ Total Classes Held) × 100

Example: If you attended 42 out of 60 classes: 42 ÷ 60 × 100 = 70%

Since 70% is below the standard 75% requirement, this student would need to attend more classes before the semester ends.

75% Attendance Calculator – The Most Important Threshold

The 75% rule is the most commonly enforced attendance requirement in Indian colleges and universities. Here is what it means in practice:

  • Out of every 4 classes held, you must attend at least 3.
  • If your college holds 100 classes in a semester, you must attend at least 75.
  • Miss more than 25% of total classes and you risk being barred from the final exam.

How Many Classes Can I Miss with the 75% Rule?

Maximum Missed = Total Classes × 0.25

For example, if 80 classes are held this semester, you can miss a maximum of 20 classes (80 × 0.25 = 20) and still maintain exactly 75%.

⚡ Pro Tip: Always keep a buffer of 5% above the minimum. Life happens — illness, emergencies, travel. Aim for 80%+ so unexpected absences don’t put you in the danger zone.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate my attendance percentage?

Divide the number of classes you attended by the total number of classes held, then multiply by 100. Formula: (Attended ÷ Total) × 100. Or simply use the free attendance calculator at the top of this page.

What happens if attendance is below 75%?

Most colleges will issue a warning first. If attendance remains below 75% by end of semester, students may be detained, denied the hall ticket, or barred from final exams. Some colleges allow condonation with medical certificates for attendance between 65–74%.

How many classes can I miss in a semester of 90 classes?

With a 75% requirement: 90 × 0.25 = 22 classes maximum. You must attend at least 68 out of 90 classes.

Is there an attendance calculator for monthly percentage?

Yes. Use the same formula monthly: (Days Present ÷ Working Days in Month) × 100. Our multi-subject tracker logs daily attendance so you can monitor it month by month.

Can medical leave improve my attendance percentage?

In many colleges, yes. If your institution has a medical leave policy, doctor-certified absences can be excluded from the total count — effectively raising your attendance percentage. Use the Medical Leave Calculator tab in our tool to see your adjusted figure.
